Bank holiday celebrations at the Demonstration Kitchen

This week at the demonstration kitchen we are looking forward to the May Day Bank Holiday and our Chef, Hayley Edwards, will be with us on both Thursday and Friday. The menus this week are ideal to create and enjoy with friends, with Thursday’s focus on produce supplied by our traders D’Issa and on Friday the focus will be on Indian inspired dishes with produce from our traders Gujarati Rasoi.
If you are entertaining over the Bank Holiday, why not try out some of these dishes? On our Chef Hayley's menu this week:
Lamb Kebabs with Almond and Raisin Couscous
Couscous is a very quick and simple alternative to rice or pasta and Hayley partners this with Lamb Kebabs to make any Bank Holiday celebrations go down a storm.
Key Ingredients:
- Extra virgin Belic vodjanska from D’Issa
- Lamb from Northfield Farm
Matching Wine:
Roche Audran Cotes du Rhone from Borough Wines is a lovely, moreish, soft wine that will match the delicate taste of the cous cous perfectly!
Smokvenjak with Goats Cheese and Prosciutto
This delicious canapé is perfect for a lazy Bank Holiday spread for family and friends. The smooth creaminess of the goats cheese combines perfectly sweet crunchiness of the Smokvenjak.
Key Ingredients:
- Smokvenjak from D’Issa
- Goats Cheese from Mons Cheesemongers
- Proscuitto from Gastronomica
Matching Wine:
Beaujolais Blanc Chateau de Lavernette is a delightful French wine with a hints of honey and orange in the taste that will compliment the smokenjak.
Fish and prawn curry
Bank Holiday cooking shouldn’t be a chore, so this Gujarati Rasoi inspired fish and prawn curry recipe is perfect for your menu and demonstrates how wonderfully easy it is to cook with fish.
Key Ingredients:
- Uncooked prawns and white fish fillets from Shellseekers Fish & Game
- Garam Masala from Spice Mountain alternatively you could try Gujarati Rasoi’s cooking sauce specifically for fish dishes
Matching Wine:
Gewürztraminer is a dry, sweet wine, which compliments the spiciness and rich flavours of Indian cuisine.
Dhal
A true staple of Indian vegetarian cuisine, Dhal is great alternative to meat and fish for your guests to try.
Key Ingredients:
- Root Ginger from Only Organics
- Tumeric from Spice Mountain
Matching Wine:
Riesling is a fresh and zingy wine with fruit undertones will be the perfect accompaniment to this warm and spicy Dhal.
