Categories: Behind the stalls

The likes and dislikes of Roi Queiruga from Gorwydd Caerphilly

Fantasy job
Professional marbles player.

Worst job
I spent a few months doing marketing research for a company that compiled data and sold it to whoever wanted, like the newspapers. It was definitely not me.

Last film you really liked
The Story of the Weeping Camel. It is the story of a camel calf that was rejected by its mother. So, the owners of the camel decide to perform this ritual where a musician plays and a woman sings to the camel in the hope that the mother will accept the calf. The film is about the journey of the two young boys going to the capital to find the musician.

Favourite TV show
Eurovision, but it is only on once a year. It is the most watched non-sporting event in the world, so it must have something.

Favourite holiday destination
Camping Ancoradoiro in Galicia, Spain. It is in what you would call a national park. The place we go is owned by a friend. He also has a place that farms lobsters. We always have a great time and the food is amazing. It is all very relaxed and we often stay in tents left behind by other campers. The campsite and restaurant are the only buildings in the area. It is a beautiful place.

Favourite dish as a child
One of my grandad’s roast chickens. He lived a self-sufficient life, as much as he could, so he had chickens, pigs, he grew whatever he could. I remember the chickens running free, rampaging through the garden eating whatever they wanted to. They were absolutely delicious.

Signature dish
Tortilla. It is a very honest dish, made with three ingredients: eggs, potatoes and salt.

Best recent meal
Steak dinner at Elliot’s with a few fellow market traders. It was so good that for desert we had another steak. They are absolutely phenomenal.

Worst kitchen disaster
I made preserves at home. A bottle of tomato fritada exploded and my kitchen ceiling got immediately redecorated.

Worst day at work
One day I knocked over a shelf of that was filled with bottles of vinegars. It took days for the smell to disappear.

Favourite subjects at school
Physics and chemistry.

Favourite drink
Homemade liqueur de café (grappa made by my godmother, macerated for a year with coffee), it’s the perfect end for a dinner with all my gang before we head off into the night.

Favourite historical figure
Sojourner Truth. She was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She was born a slave in about 1800 so couldn’t read or write, but escaped to freedom in the 1820s. She was a brilliant speaker who attracted large crowds wherever she spoke.

Sporting hero

Sporting villain
Cristiano Ronaldo.

Favourite album
Difficult question, but it will be one with old school bossa nova.

Best gig
Here in London, when the musician Shigeto used to work as a cheesemonger during the day at Neal’s Yard Dairy.

Favourite thing about London
Borough Market.

Favourite city
It would have to be split: Barcelona in the day and Madrid at night.

Favourite book
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.

Biggest annoyance
Rude people.

Hangover cure
Nigella Lawson.
