The East London Liquor Company opens a new bottle shop and tasting table at the Market
The East London Liquor Company is that most beautiful of things: inventive, independent, relatively small in operation, based in London—and a producer of truly delicious gins and spirits. You may already be well acquainted with the distillery’s much-loved originals (Batch No 1, Batch No 2, and London Dry gins), as well as its own-brand rye whisky, the first to be produced in London for more than a century. But there’s much more to be discovered—now more so than ever, with the launch of East London Liquor Company’s new bottle shop at Borough Market, opening just a few doors down from its original stall on Rochester Walk. The brand’s Bow Wharf-made gins and whisky will sit alongside another stalwart: its demerara rum. Upon starting the business, founder Alex Wolpert travelled to Guyana to find out what makes this golden nectar the country’s spirit of choice. There he discovered the Diamond Distillery, which now produces a line exclusively for East London Liquor Company to Alex’s tried and tested recipe.
The move has also allowed East London Liquor Company to expand its already marvellous range of high quality spirits sourced from other producers, each of which is selected by bar manager Jasmine and Borough Market Bottle Shop manager Nicolai, who draw on their extensive knowledge of all things spirituous to pick out the best bottles from around the world, many of which you would struggle to find elsewhere in the UK. What’s more, the new space will feature a tasting table, where customers can take part in a guided tasting—or simply sit and sip a G&T made with London Dry Gin and East London Liquor Company tonic, or a Batch No 2 negroni, with nibbles alongside.
