The Trustees of Borough Market are delighted to announce the appointment of Darren Henaghan as Managing Director, who will commence his role on 1st October

Darren will join Borough Market from his current role of Director of Environment for the London Borough of Ealing. Darren (pictured below) brings a wealth of leadership and operational management experience. After training as a civil engineer, he made his name in local government, first with Barking and Dagenham, then Thurrock, and latterly in Ealing. Over the past 18 years, he has built a reputation as a specialist in place-based development programmes, including the delivery of environmental services and affordable housing.

Born and raised on a beef farm in Staffordshire, Darren is rooted in the world of food production. He has worked as a trustee of Waste Watch, an environmental charity, and held a series of government advisory roles, covering food safety and other regulatory matters.

Working closely with the Trustees, staff and traders, Darren will be responsible for strategy and taking Borough Market to the next stage in its evolution.

Track record in public service
Donald Hyslop, Chair of the Trustees of Borough Market, said: “As a long-term resident of southeast London, with a track record in public service across several London boroughs, Darren has gained an acute understanding of the community that this market is here to serve. It is this, paired with his considerable experience of managing major projects on behalf of multiple stakeholders, that gives us confidence in his ability to work alongside the Market’s staff, Trustees and traders to sustain the progress that has been made under Keith Davis’s stewardship over the last five years.

“As the Trustees of this world renowned food institution, we are extremely grateful to Keith for the work he has put in over the past five years. We are confident that with Darren’s leadership Borough Market will continue to thrive for many years to come.”

Creativity and diversity
Darren Henaghan said: “Borough Market is a microcosm of what makes me so proud to be part of London. It brings together the best produce from around the world and, like London itself, is the very essence of creativity, pride and diversity. I am looking forward to playing my part in its  continued growth and success.”

Darren will replace Keith Davis, who is retiring at the end of September. During his time at Borough Market, Keith has overseen the successful delivery of some major projects including the reopening of Three Crown Square, the opening of the Market Hall and a significant strengthening of the Market’s commitment to sustainable food production, waste reduction and community outreach.
